For a a quick and easy, but healthy and flavorful meal, I love stopping by Maman. It's basically the bakery and cafe of my dreams, featuring high quality, locally-sourced ingredients with a always evolving and inspired menu. Pop in for coffee (how cute are their cups?!) and freshly baked breads and pastries, or take a seat and enjoy housemade quiches, seasonal salads, and hearty sandwiches. I'm a huge fan of their unique and flavorful baked goods, including the nutella babka loaf, spiced carrot cake, white chocolate blueberry & lavender loaf, chunky monkey brioche, and the signature 'famous' nutty chocolate chip cookie.

One of my favorite things ever is Maman's cookie dough ice cream sandwich! It uses two slabs of melt-in-your-mouth cookie dough instead of baked cookies, wrapped around tasty McConnell's ice cream. Heaven! I recently stopped in for their new brunch service at the Brooklyn location, and both the waffle-iron hashbrowns (with smoked salmon, avocado & egg) and the roasted cauliflower salad (with kale, dates & egg) were super flavorful and satisfying. I'm looking forward to trying a matcha white hot chocolate this winter!

sqirl

Whether you live in Los Angeles or not, you've most likely heard of Sqirl. What began as a preserves company five years ago is now one of the most popular breakfast and lunch spots in LA. Sqirl serves a market-driven menu, with reimagined classics as well as super creative specials, all in a tiny space in Silver Lake. My husband and I stopped by on a recent trip to LA, and there were so many intriguing things on the menu we wanted to try. We ended up ordering mostly breakfast, and began with perfect cappuccinos and the highly acclaimed (just browse through Instagram!) brioche toast: a thick slab of freshly baked bread, smothered i just-milled almond hazelnut butter and homemade olallieberry & aprium jam. Talk about a mouthful, and it was so satisfying and delicious. The smoked whitefish tartine was such a unique and complex use of flavors- with smoky eggplant and cilantro powder- I couldn't get enough! For a hearty vegetarian option, the chickpea flour "pancake" is a solid choice, and is perfectly balanced with the creamy labneh and fresh celery salad. Sqirl is also known for their baked goods, and while I surprisingly didn't try any this time, the Malva pudding cake, Sqirl power balls, and Valrhona & Fleur de Sel cookies looked particularly tempting. I look forward to getting a few next time I'm in town, as well as trying out the lunch menu!

local foods

Local Foods is one of my favorite lunch spots in my hometown of Houston, Texas. They serve a gourmet selection of sandwiches and salads, all prepared with delicious, local ingredients. There are tons of fresh and satisfying options to choose from, including a banh mi, chicken posole, a vegan quinoa burger, and several seasonal salads. My favorite sandwich is the Garden Sammie, which is filled to the brim with Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, local sprouts, pickled onion, tomato, avocado spread & hummus on a chewy Ciabatta bun. You can also get their sandwiches made as salads, so occasionally I do that and add grilled chicken, which is equally tasty! But sometimes freshly baked bread is really where it's at, ya know? It comes with your choice of two sides, and instead of the typical (and boring!) fries or mixed greens, Local Foods offers some truly flavorful and worthy options, like Tuscan kale salad, cauliflower tabbouli, soba noodles, and quinoa!

There's truly something for everyone here, making it the perfect spot for a family and friends get-together anytime I'm back home. Don't miss the freshly baked sweets at the counter when you're ordering! The butterscotch blondie and chocolate cupcake are deliciously decadent and totally worth the indulgence!

oddfellows ice cream co.

Oddfellows Ice Cream Co. is a local Brooklyn spot from former wd50 pastry chef Sam Mason that makes some seriously tasty ice cream. I love the old-school ice cream parlor feel, but they mix things up with modern and innovative offerings. Oddfellows pasteurizes their own ice cream base, using locally-sourced, hormone-free dairy, right in their Brooklyn kitchen. This attention to detail allows them to produce some of the highest quality and freshest ice cream around. Their scrumptious flavors range from reinvented classics, like PB&J and S'mores, to totally creative and unconventional, like Miso Cherry and Chorizo Caramel Swirl. Sample several flavors before you decide, and then come back again soon to try out even more. Their menu changes seasonally, and always includes some somewhat crazy-sounding flavors! While I'm typically not one to choose sorbet, Ants on a Log (celery sorbet with peanut butter & raisins) is one of my all-time favorites! Banana Puddin' and Cornbread (can you tell I'm Southern?) are also ridiculously good, with such a great depth of flavor. I also just noticed a new flavor on their menu- Salted Coconut Sticky Rice- and cannot wait to try it out soon. If you post a picture of your treat, don't forget to use their signature hashtag: #errbodylovesicecream!

meyer's bageri

Meyer's Bageri is a cute little Danish bakery in Williamsburg that turns out some truly delectable baked goods. Danish culinary entrepreneur Claus Meyer is behind it, along with new restaurant Agern and Great Northern Food Hall in Grand Central Terminal. Although the bakery started as just a pop-up, their popularity soon became clear, and Meyer's returned as a full-time brick and mortar a few months later. They offer several traditional Danish pastries like kanelsnurre (cinnamon swirl buns), spandauer (round puff pastries with fillings), and tebirkes (poppy seed danishes), and also bake hearty loaves of bread daily. Ølandbrød, a native speciality made from heirloom whole wheat flour which they will mill in house, is a definite must-try.

I'm a huge cinnamon-lover, so my order always involves kanelsnurre. The morning buns, marbled with rye and topped with sunflower seeds, are chewy and delicious as well, and even better topped with avocado or hummus. On another trip I got to try the beet & cassis muffin and raspberry pop tart. These creative takes on classics blew me away- the muffin was slightly earthy and not too sweet, with a moist crumb and crunchy streusel topping, while the pop tart had a perfectly flaky crust. I'm excited to return soon to devour the new, seasonal danish: pumpkin spice spandauer with brown butter glaze and pepita brittle! Yum!

dune

Middle Eastern food is probably my all-time favorite cuisine. I could eat it again and again, and never tire of it. I just love all the flavorful and well-balanced dishes, from the unique use of vegetables to the freshly baked breads- I can't get enough! I had heard great things about Dune in Atwater Village, and made sure to stop by on a recent trip to Los Angeles. This casual, no-frills spot doesn't offer a huge menu, but they don't need to. They do a few things very well, so you really can't go wrong. Place your order, then pick a seat out on the sidewalk patio, and enjoy your food al fresco. My husband and I shared the pickled beet sandwich and the lamb and falafel Mezze plate. The sandwich comes on perfectly chewy ciabatta, piled high with pickled beets, toum, capers, kalamata olives, pickled onions, Bulgarian feta, an 8-minute egg, shoestring potatoes, and seasonal greens. It's a mouthful, but a truly delicious and well-balanced one. The Mezze offers everything I love about Middle Eastern cuisine all on one plate.  The pasture-raised lamb and organic green herb falafel come with housemade flatbread, hummus, house pickles, marinated cabbage and onions, tahini sauce, olives, and seasonal greens. I love using the flatbread as a vehicle to enjoy everything at once. Just pile it on and devour. Dune will definitely be added to my regular LA rotation- I already cannot wait to go back (and try the baklava!) next time I'm in town.
